Bobcats

About Bobcats

The Bobcat, sometimes referred to as a Skid-Steer Loader, is an extremely robust machine and it’s unique skid steer action allows for great manoeuvrability. Bobcats was originally designed for cleaning out stables in America. Australians pioneered the versatility of the bobcat on building sites.  The Bobcat has nearly replaced the wheelbarrow on building sites; it is great for shifting material from one place to another.  An excavator which is digging a swimming pool in a backyard with no truck access, will need a bobcat to take the excavated material to the waiting Tipper in the front yard.

On firm ground the Bobcat performs at its best. A bobcat also achieves good compaction because of it’s four small points of contact with the ground.

On sites where the ground is wet, soft, sand or steep, better results will be achieved by a version of the bobcat which has 2 tracks instead of four tyres.  This machine is called Posi Track.

When should I use a Bobcat?

Some tasks a Bobcat can perform well include.:

  • General Landscaping
  • Conturing in preparation for turf
  • Spreading and trimming topsoil
  • Slab preps
  • Concrete sand-ups
  • Placing sand in trenches
  • Backfilling trenches
  • Trimming roadbase
  • Bitumen preps
  • Loading trucks
  • Stockpiling
  • Bulking out
  • Levelling
  • Cutting and filling
  • Swales
  • Back yard clean-ups

Achieving Best Results

Best results are usually achieved using a 'Combo', which is an operator with both a Bobcat and an Excavator onsite. This is themost versatile and most common onsite requirement for earthmoving.

When choosing our most suitable Bobcat for your job, our allocator will use the information  you provide to ensure that the machine width and any special attachments specific to your job is supplied.  If your job is wet, soft, sand or steep, we recommend using a Posi Track instead of a bobcat.

What size Bobcat do I need?

When choosing our most suitable Bobcat for your job, our allocator will need to know:

  • How wide is the access to your job
  • Information about the type of work to be performed so we can provide a Bobcat with the required attachments.

The best size machine for the job is generally the largest size that can fit into a space without the size of the machine limiting its ability. A standard or medium size bobcat is approximately 1500mm wide.
